Das kosmopoliitsche Qeuvre des bekennenden Individualisten umfaßt heute 34 Filme. Sie brillieren - seit 1978 nach eigenem Buch - in vielen Genres vom Musical übers Melodram bis zum Western.

Zu seinen Meisterwerken zwischen Hollywood und Nil zählen die realistischen Milieustudien KAIRO HAUPTBAHNHOF (1958) und DIE ERDE (1968), die historischen Dramen SALADIN (1963) und ADIEU BONAPARTE (1985), und seine autobiographische Trilogie ALEXANDRIA... WARUM? (1978, Silberner Bär der Berlinale), EINE äGYPTISCHE ERZäHLUNG (1982) und FüR IMMER ALEXANDRIA (1990).

Nach Retrospektiven in Locarno und der Cinématheque Francaise erhielt Youssef Chahine 1997 für sein Lebenswerk den Jubiläumspreis des 50. Festivals von Cannes und kam mit DAS SCHICKSAL (1997) erstmals mit großem Erfolg ins deutsche Kino.
