August 1916 in eine kinderreiche Familie aus Montana hineingeboren, war Innenarchitektur-Student und Schwergewichtsboxer, bevor er sich entschloss, nach Hollywood zu gehen. Unter seinem bürgerlichen Namen George Letz hatte er 1935 seinen ersten Filmauftritt, arbeitete sich als Nebendarsteller und Stuntman hoch, ehe er sich nach seinem Kriegsdienst mit Filmen wie "Tochter der Prärie" (1948), "Auf dem Kriegspfad" (1950), "Zwei räumen auf" (1951), "Überfall in Texas" (1953), "Desperados" (1955) oder "In Tombstone ist der Teufel los" (1958) als Star des B-Western etablierte. In den 60er-Jahren arbeitete der Action-Held auch als Regisseur ("Der Mann mit der stählernen Klaue", "Der Rebell von Palawan"). Mehr und mehr aber verlegte sich der Vielseitige auf eine ganz andere Fähigkeit, für die er in Hollywood berühmt war: Montgomery war ein Möbeltischler von Weltformat und entwarf u. a. für Columbia Bühnenbilder und Requisiten. 1986 nahm er mit dem Kriegsfilm "Commando Wild Wind" Abschied von der Leinwand. Am 12. Dezember 2000 erlitt er einen tödlichen Herzanfall." (BR Presse)
