John is the Executive Director of the Market Theatre as well as a Trustee of the Market Theatre and Director of the Laboratory. He has been the Associate Artistic Director of the Market Theatre in Johannesburg since 1987.
John's numerous performances at the Market Theatre include THE BLOOD KNOT, DRIVING MISS DAISY, OTHELLO, SIZWE BANZI IS DEAD, THE ISLAND, WAITING FOR GODOT, MASTER HAROLD AND THE BOYS and hiis award-winning performance in MY CHILDREN! MY AFRICA! - The latter five John also performed in London.
Most recently John has appeared at the Market Theatre in DUET FOR ONE, THE LION AND THE LAMB and PLAYLAND, the latter having had a highly successful season at the Donmar Warehouse in London, and a four month tour of Australia and New Zealand. John has also directed GOREE, BLUES AFRICA BLUES, KAGOOS and THE MEETING at the Market Theatre.
John Kani has also appeared in numerous South African and international films. He is very active in the political life of the New South Africa and is a member of the parliment. Among other activities John Kani was the host for the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as President.
