Biografia in Tedesco (in Tedesco): Jacques Tourneur, geboren 1904 in Paris, ist der Sohn des Regisseurs Maurice Tourneur, dem er 1914 in die USA folgte. Er wuchs in Hollywood auf und war ab 1924 bei MGM beschäftigt. Zunächst arbeitete er als Schauspieler und half bei den Produktionen seines Vaters. 1928 kehrte er nach Paris zurück und führte den Schnitt bei den Filmen seines Vaters. Sein Regiedebüt feierte Tourneur 1931 mit 'Un vieux garçon'. Zurück in Hollywood 1935 arbeitete er wieder für MGM, diesmal als Second-Unit Regisseur bei dem Film 'A Tale of Two Cities'.
Ab 1939 führte er dann selbst Regie, zunächst bei B-Movies, später dann bei Horror-Klassikern der früheren 40er Jahre, wie 'Cat People' und 'I Walked with a Zombie'. Mit 'Out of the Past' gelingt es Tourneur, die bedrohliche Grundstimmung seiner Horror-Filme und die obsessive Vorliebe für alles Schwarze auf den 'film noir' zu übertragen.
