Biographical Notes in German: begann 1889 seine Laufbahn als Schauspieler in Gera und kam über zahlreiche deutsche Provinzbühnen 1903 an Max Reinhardts Deutsches Theater, dem er bis 1938 die Treue hielt. Von 1938 bis 1945 am Schiller Theater Berlin, dann von 1945 bis zu seinem Tode am Deutschen Theater. Seit 1920 Mitwirkung an 168 Filmen, nach 1945 auch an der DEFA. Nationalpreise 1959, 1952 und 1959
