William A. Wellman was born under the given name William Augustus Wellman on February 29, 1896 in Brookline, Massachusetts, USA. He was an American Director, Author, Producer, known for Across the wide Missouri (1951), Buffalo Bill (1943), Westward the Women (1951), William A. Wellman's first movie on record is from 1919. He was married to Helene Chadwick (1918-1923), Margery Chapin (1925-1926), Marjorie Crawford (1931-1933), Dorothy Coonan (1934-1975). William A. Wellman died on December 9, 1975 in Los Angeles, California, USA. His last motion picture on file dates from 1976.
Biographical Notes in German: Studium an der Newton High School 1908-1915, 1915 als Freiwilliger zur Französischen Armee, damm im Dezember 1916 zur Fremdenlegion. Als im Juni 1917 die USA in den Krieg eintreten, kommt Wellman zur Fliegertruppe und zur "Escadrille Lafayette". 1918 wird er abgeschossen und schliesslich mit Auszeichnungen entlassen.
ZurĂĽck in den USA trifft er auf Douglas Fairbanks und wird zuerst Schauspieler, bis er sich entscheidet, Regisseur zu werden. Nachdem er bei Goldwyn in verschiedenen Funktionen arbeitete, dreht Wellman schliesslich seine ersten Filme bei Fox.
Zu den exemplarischen Filmen von Wellman zählen der frühe Fliegerfilm "Wings", die Western "Across the wide Missouri", "The Ox-Bow Incident" und "Yellow Sky" sowie der Kriegfilm "The Story of G.I.Joe".
