Robert Culp wurde am 16. August 1930 in Oakland, California, geboren und trat bereits als Schüler im lokalen Theater auf. Sen erstes Geld verdiente er sich mit Cartoons, und der sportliche Absolvent der Berkeley High School gewann Medaillen an mehreren Wettbewerben amerikanischer Universitäten. Seine Liebe für das Theater gewann schliesslich die Oberhand und Culp zog 1951 nach New York, um bei Herbert Berghof Schauspielunterricht zu nehmen. Sein Broadway Debür hatte Culp 1953 als Partner von Katharina Cornell in "The Prescott Proposals".

Ein ersten Serienerfolg im amerikanischen Fernsehen gelang Culp als Texas Ranger in "Trackdown" (1957), und zeitlebens hatte Culp mit seinen TV-Auftritte weit mehr Erfolg als mit seinen Filmrollen: Die Rolle des smarten und gut-aussehenden Agenten in "Tennisschläger und Kanonen" schien Robert Culp auf den Leib geschrieben.

In den Sechziger Jahren engagierte sich Robert Culp besonders auch für die amerikanische Bürgerrechtsbewegung um Martin Luther King.

Culp starb im Alter von 79 Jahren an den Folgen eines Sturzes in der Nähe seines Hauses in Beberly Hills. (lhg 2011)
