Biographical Notes in German: Innovativer Regisseur des französischen Stummfilms, in Warschau geboren und vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg über die Schweiz nach Frankreich gelangt. Filmtheoretische Arbeiten nach der Begegnung mit den avantgardistischen Regisseuren Louis Delluc, Germaine Dulac und Abel Gance, Erste Kurzfilme 1922, Ende der Zwanziger Jahre entstanden seine beiden wichtigsten Werke, die Edgar Allan Poe Adaption "Der Untergang des Hauses Usher" und "Finis Terrae", ein mit Laien gedrehter Film in der Bretagne.
Nach 1930 fast ausschliesslich Dokumentarfilm, meist ĂĽber Landschaften in Frankreich. Epsteins letzter Film 1948 - seine Tonfilme erreichten nie mehr die Suggestivkraft der Werke aus der Stummfilmzeit.
