Seine Frau war Minta Durfee (Scheidung 1925). Arbuckle drehte von 1913 bis 1920 über 70 Filme und wirkte in 6 Chaplin Filmen mit. Ab 1916 führte er selbst Regie. 1917 ging er nach New York und arbeitete für die Paramount. 1919 verdiente er 1 Million Dollar pro Jahr, doch 1921 war seine Karriere jäh zu Ende, als er in eine Sex Skandal verwicklet wurde, bei dem das Starlet Virgina Rappe umkam. Arbuckle wurde freigesprochen, doch die Öffentlichkeit sorgte dafür, dass niemand mehr das Risiko einging, seine Filme aufzuführen. 1926 startete er unter dem Pseudonym William Goodrich ein Comeback als Regisseur.
