Joan Fontaine was born on October 22, 1917 in Tokyo. She was an American Actress, known for A Damsel in Distress (1937), From this day forward (1946), Beyond any reasonable doubt (1956), Joan Fontaine's first movie on record is from 1935. Joan Fontaine died on December 15, 2013 in Carmel, California, USA. Her last motion picture on file dates from 1996.
Biographical Notes in German: eigentlich Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland, Schwester, geboren in Tokyo, zogen ihre Eltern mit ihrer älteren Schwester, der der Schauspielerin Olivia de Havilland, 1919 nach Kalifornien. Ihrer Theaterkarriere begann 1935, im gleichen Jahr unterzeichnete sie einen Filmvertrag mit RKO Pictures.
1941 wurde sie als beste Schauspielerin in Hitchcock's Rebecca für den Oscar erhielt, 1942 erhielt sie dann die Auszeichnung für ihre Hauptrolle in Suspicion, ebenfalls von Alfred Hitchcock. Zu ihren grossen Rollen in den Vierziger Jahren zählen weiters The Constant Nymph (1943),Jane Eyre (1944), Ivy (1947), und Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948).
Nach 1950 wurden ihre Erfolge spärlicher, Ivanhoe (1952), Beyond a Reasonable Doubt (1956) oder Tender Is the Night (1962) wären noch zu nennen. The Witches im Jahre 1966 war Joan Fontaine's letzte Filmrolle, die aber bis 1994 noch TV-Rollen spielte.
