Jean Grémillon died on November 29, 1959 in Paris. His last motion picture on file dates from 1959.

"Regisseur Jean Grémillon gehört zu den großen Namen des französischen Kinos, auf das er von den letzten Tage des Stummfilms bis zu den späten 50er Jahren prägenden Einfluss hatte. Er wurde 1901 in Bayeux in der Normandie geboren. Zum Kino kam er als Geigenspieler, er begleitete Stummfilme, um sein Studium an der "Schola Cantorum" zu finanzieren. Nach einer Reihe von Kurzdokumentationen, die leider verschollen sind, drehte Grémillon 1928 mit "Maldone" seinen ersten Spielfilm. Bereits Anfang der 30er Jahre verwendete Grémillon die neuen Techniken des Tonfilms, stieß damit seinerzeit jedoch beim Publikum eher auf Ablehnung. Es folgten Erfolge mit Filmen wie "Gueule d'amour" (1937), "Remorques" (1941), "Le 6 Juin à l'aube"(1945) und "Pattes blanches" (1949). Seine späten Werke realisierte er - bedingt durch Produktionsschwierigkeiten - nur noch als Kurzfilme. Sein letzter Film war "André Masson et les quatre éléments" (1958). Jean Grémillon starb 1959 in Paris. Er war Mitglied des "Comité de libération du cinéma français", Präsident der "Cinémathèque française" und außerdem aktives Mitglied der "Ciné-Club"- Bewegung."
