Seine Markenzeichen waren virtuos choreographierte Massenszenen in langen Plansequenzen mit elaborierten Kamerabewegungen. Oft bearbeitete er historische Stoffe, die Filme handeln nicht von Menschen als Individuen, sondern von Menschen als Volk. Sie sind auch Analysen der Macht, und politisch gingen sie zu ihrer Zeit stets etwas zu weit.
