Der in Baden-Württemberg geborene Regisseur Paul Leni ging nach einer Ausbildung als Kunstschlosser an die Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Berlin und arbeitete dort als Kunstmaler, Bühnenbildner, Karikaturist und Grafiker und gestaltet Plakate und Anzeigen für Filmfirmen. Nach langjähriger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Regisseur und Produzenten Joe May inszenierte er 1916 - zum Militär eingezogen - für das Bild- und Film-Amt den Film Der Feldarzt
Als Bühnenbildner Zusammenarbeit mit Max Reinhardt und Leopold Jessner. Neben Entwürfen für Ernst Lubitsch und Joe May machte er vor allem als Regisseur und Ausstatter eigene Filme: Das Melodram Prima Vera (1917), den Abenteuerfilm Das Rätsel von Bangalor (1917), den Märchenfilm Dornröschen (1917), Prinz Kuckuck (1919) sowie das Drama Patience (1920). Seine Filme weisen die Tradition des Expressionismus aus, Leni schuf zwei der bedeutendsten Filme der 20er Jahre Deutschlands: mit Jessner "Hintertreppe" als Beispiel des Kammerspielfilms und mit Robert Wiene "Das Wachsfigurenkabinett", der in drei Geschichten drei Tyrannen charakterisiert.
Es folgte eine sehr produktive Zeit in Hollywood mit einigen sowohl kommerziell als auch künstlerisch erfolgreichen Filmen wie The Cat and the Canary - Spuk im Schloss (1927) und The Man who laughs - Der Mann, der lacht (1928), die Leni zum Wegbereiter des Horrorfilms machten.
