Biographical Notes in German: Der grösste weibliche Star aller alten Komödien, die Mack Sennett drehte, war Mabel Normand, Charlie Chaplins erste grosse Partnerin. Mabel wurde am 16. November 1894 in Boston geboren oder am 10. November 1895 in Providence, wie Mack Sennett in seiner Autobiographie schreibt. Sie wurde getauft auf den Namen Mabel Ethelreid Normand, ihr Vater war ein französischer Pianist, ihre Mutter eine Irin. Nachdem die Familie 1908 nach New York gezogen war, arbeitete Mabel als Fotomodell und wurde kurz darauf von der „Vitagraph“ unter dem Namen Mabel Fortescue für eine Serie von Filmen über „Betty“ verpflichtet. Dann drehte sie zusammen mit Mack Sennett in einigen Filmen von David Wark Griffith als Statistin, und Sennett sagte ihr damals eine grosse Zukunft als Filmkomikerin voraus.

Als Mack Sennett die „Biograph“ verliess und die „Keystone“ gründete, nahm er Mabel Normand mit sich und machte aus ihr die Heldin unzähliger Filme. In den kurzen Keystone-Komödien entwickelte sie sich zum grossen Star, dessen Spiel ganz auf der mimischen Ausdruckskraft beruhte. Mit Roscoe „Fatty“ Arbuckle und Charlie Chaplin wurde sie Titelheldin einer Reihe von Filmen, die sie teilweise selbst inszenierte. Mack Sennett, der zeitlebens Junggeselle und in sie verliebt war, baute ihr ein eigenes Studio, wo sie - unter Sennetts Anleitung - ihre Filme drehen konnte.

Während einiger Zeit spielte Mabel Normand bei Regisseuren der Goldwyn-Produktion in einigen Filmen, die nicht den gewünschten Erfolg errangen. Sie kehrte 1921 zu Sennett zurück, nun als Hauptdarstellerin in seinen grossen abendfüllenden Spielfilmen „Molly O“ (1921), „Suzanna“ (1922/23) und „The Extra Girl“ („Die Statistin“, 1923), alle drei unter Sennetts Oberleitung von Richard Jones inszeniert, wurden ihre grossen künstlerischen Erfolge. Sie hatte sich von der Slapstick-Artistin nun vollauf zur anspruchsvollen Schauspielerin entwickelt, und in „The Extra Girl“ finden sich nochmals die Elemente der früheren Komik in eine meisterhafte Form umgegossen.

1922 wurde Mabel in den Mordfall um den Regisseur William Desmond Taylor verwickelt, der am 1. Februar unter mysteriösen Umständen gestorben war. Mabel war die letzte Person, die Taylor lebend gesehen hatte - so hiess es wenigstens - und, obwohl keine Beweise gefunden werden konnten, dass sie in irgendeinem Zusammenhang mit seinem Tode stand, war ihre Karriere trotz aller Fürsprache Sennetts ruiniert. Sie drehte unter Hal Roach 1926 nochmals drei mittellange Filme, 1929 wurde sie in ein Sanatorium bei Monrovia eingeliefert und starb am 23. Februar 1930 an Tuberkulose.

In die Filmgeschichte eingegangen ist Mabel Normand - wenigstens nach Mack Sennetts Worten - als Erfinderin des legendären Tortenwurfs in der Slapstick-Komödie. Wie die Equipe mit Mack Sennett bei der Keystone eine Szene mit Ben Turpin drehen wollte, war niemand von der Komik des Auftritts überzeugt. Mabel, die in dieser Szene eigentlich nichts zu tun hatte, sass ausserhalb des Bildes. Sie sah plötzlich neben sich eine Torte, die zwei Schreiner sich zum Dessert aufgehoben hatten. „Mabel schnüffelte, und sie war inspiriert. Sie wog die Torte in ihrer rechten Hand ab, schätzte sie wohlwollend ein, balancierte sich selbst auf den Ballen ihrer Füsse aus, fasste Stellung wie ein grosser Ballwerfer und war. Filmgeschichte, Millionen von Dollar und eine Million Lachsalven folgten ihr, als die Torte in einer gezogenen Kurve flog und mit einer dumpfen Explosion in Ben Turpins Gesicht verspritzte.“ Sennett selbst erfand für den Aufschlag einer Sahnetorte im Gesicht einen neuen Fachausdruck, das lautmalerische Wort „the splurch“. Wenn diese Geschichte sich vielleicht auch nicht ganz so zugetragen hat, wie Sennett sie schilderte, so ist sie doch eine schöne Episode aus Mabel Normands Leben, das nur sechsunddreissig Jahre währte.

Sie war, Hollywoods gefürchtete Kolumnistinnen Hedda Hopper und Louella Parsons gingen hier einig, eine grosse Schauspielerin. (lhg)
