Sidney Olcott was born under the given name John Sidney Alcott on September 20, 1873 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was an American Actor, Director, Author, known for Ben Hur (1907), The Charmer (1925), Not so long ago (1925), Sidney Olcott's first movie on record is from 1907. He was married to Valentine Grant. Sidney Olcott died on December 16, 1949 in Hollywood, California, USA. His last motion picture on file dates from 2011.
Biographical Notes in German: Eigentlich John Sidney Alcott, Schauspieler und Regisseur des amerikanischen Stummfilms. Geboren und aufgewachsen in bescheidenen Verhältnissen in Toronto, seine Mutter Mary Alcott war irischer Abstammung, über seinen Vater ist nichts bekannt. Bis zu seinem 30. Lebensjahr hatte Olcott sich mit Gelegenheitsjobs und einigen kleinen Theaterrollen durchgeschlagen, 1903 starb seine Mutter und Olcott nach New York, um dort eine Schauspieler-Karriere zu beginnen.
Eine erste Theaterrolle in "When the Harvest Days Are Over" erhielt Olcott durch John "Pop" Ince, den Vater des künftigen Produzenten Thomas H. Ince. In "Billy the Kid", mit Marion Leonard, lernte er den Schauspielerkollegen Robert G. Vignola kennen, mit dem ihn eine lebenslange Freundschaft verbinden sollte. Bereits nach kurzer Zeit erhielt Olcott erste kleine Filmrollen, und 1907 nach der Gründung der KALEM durch Kleine, Long und Marion wurde Olcott als Schauspieler und als Regisseur engagiert. Das bescheidene Kapital der KALEM zwang die Firma, statt in einem eigenen Studio ihre Filme an Aussendrehorten zu drehen, und Olcott konnte sich mit dieser Bedingungen hervorragend anfreunden. Neben Vignola wurde vor allem die Schauspielerin und Autorin Gene Gauntier (1885-1961) seine wichtigste Partnerin. Unter Olcotts ersten Filmen sind "The Sea Wolf" (1907) nach Jack London und "Ben Hur" nach dem Roman von Lew Wallace, adaptiert von Gene Gauntier. Der Film sollte nicht nur als erste Verfilmung dieses berühmten Stoffes in die Filmgeschichte eingehen, sondern zog auch wegen den Copyright-Verletzungen einen jahrelangen Prozess hinter sich, der schliesslich mit einer Zahlung von $25 000 durch die KALEM endete, eine Summe, die die Produktionsfirma mit einem Lächeln bezahlen konnte, spielte der Film doch über Jahre Woche für Woche fünftausend Dollar Reingewinn ein!
Wohl als erster Regisseur drehte Sidney Olcott einen Film mit Locations in verschiedenen Kontinenten: "The Lad from Old Ireland" wurde an Locations in Irland und in New York gedreht. Am 6. August 1910 waren Olcott, Gauntier, Vignola und weitere Schauspieler mit dem Kameramann George K. Hollister von New York nach Irland aufgebrochen, um an Aussenschauplätzen ind Irland und später in England und Deutschland zu drehen. Olcott sollte dann noch bis 1914 nach Irland zurückkehren, und gilt als der Regisseur, der die meisten Filme als Regisseur in Irland realisiert hat.
Nach grösseren Differenzen mit den Eignern der KALEM, vor allem auch nach der Realisierung des Christus-Films "From the Manger to the Cross" (1912), den KALEM ohne Namensnennung des Regisseurs und der Mitwirkenden herausbrachte, kam es schliesslich zum Bruch mit der Produktionsfirma, und Olcott gründete seine eigene Produktion, die Sidfilms (nach einem kurzen Zwischenspiel bei der Gene Gauntier Company).
Ohne wesentliche Erfolge setzte Sidney Olcott seine Karriere als Regisseur bis 1927 fort, realisierte u.a Filme mit Mary Pickford und Rudolph Valentino. 1949 starb Olcott in Hollywood im Haus seines alten Freundes Robert Vignola. (lhg Pordenone 2011)
