Nach seiner Ausbildung am Königlichen Theater in Stockholm bekam er dort 1965 ein Engagement und ist bis heute festes Mitglied des Ensembles. Schwedische Kinder kennen seine Stimme aus den Neuverfilmungen von "Pippi Langstrumpf" und "Karlsson auf dem Dach". International bekannt wurde er durch die Rolle des Onkel Karl in "Fanny und Alexander" (1982). Er spielte auch in Bergmans TV-Produktionen "Dabei: Ein Clown" (1997) und "Der Geburtstag" (2000)."
