Wolfgang Preiss was born on February 27, 1910 in Nürnberg. He was a German Actor, known for Salzburg Connection (1971), Dr. M (1989), Bloodline (1978), Wolfgang Preiss's first movie on record is from 1942. Wolfgang Preiss died on November 27, 2002 in Bühlerhöhe, Baden-Baden. His last motion picture on file dates from 1994.
Biographical Notes in German: Der populäre Filmschauspieler Wolfgang Preiss war seit 1955 mit seiner Frau Ruth, einer Baden-Badnerin, verheiratet. Er lebte fast 50 Jahre lang in unserer Kurstadt. Von 1951 bis 1953 war Wolfgang Preis am Theater von Baden-Baden fest engagiert. Auch später noch brillierte er in Gastrollen an der kurstädtischen Bühne.

"Wie sexy dürfen Nazis sein?", fragte das Monatsmagazin "Spiegel-Reporter" und druckte eine Bildauswahl prominenter Schauspieler ab, die irgendwann einmal vor der Kamera in Wehrmachtsuniforn geschlüpft sind. Einer der Akteure, nach denen Hollywood immer wieder rief, wenn schöngeistig-elegante, hünenhaft-stattliche oder kaltschnäuzig-schnarrende Teutonen zu besetzen waren, war Wolfgang Preiss.

Ein Filmkritiker schrieb über ihn: "Gleich, ob er nun als Offizier des Heeres, der Marine oder der Luftwaffe erschien; unabhängig, ob es sich um menschenverachtende Berserker oder musische Ästheten handelte; gleichgültig, ob das Gute oder das Böse im Uniformträger deutscher Provenienz betont werden sollte - der Nürnberger Lehrersohn mit der volltönenden Bariton-Stimme, dem vornehmen Sprachduktus und dem edlen Understatement war stets überzeugend."

So konnte er den "guten Deutschen" in Person des Grafen Stauffenberg ("Der 20. Juli", 1955) oder des Feldmarschalls Rommel ("Raid on Rommel", 1971) abwechselnd mit "Schurkenrollen", wie einem SS-Mann in "Der Kardinal" (1963) oder dem General Jodl im Präsidenten-Porträt "Ike" (1979) gleichermaßen glaubhaft verkörpern.

Abgerundet wird das Spektrum seines Schaffens mit konventionellen Action- und Kriegsfilmen wie "Der längste Tag" (1962), "Der Spion, der in die Hölle ging" (1965), "Brennt Paris?" (1966) oder "Die Brücke von Arnheim" (1977).

Noch Ende der 80-er Jahre war Wolfgang Preiss in der US-Fernsehserie "Feuersturm" als Generalfeldmarschall von Brauchitsch zu sehen und im ZDF in einer vierteiligen Serie über Albert Schweitzer.

Man täte diesem durchaus zurückhaltend agierenden Schauspieler jedoch tiefes Unrecht, würde man ihn allein auf die Uniformrollen reduzieren. Preiss, der seit 1932 auf der Bühne stand und noch während des Krieges vom Film entdeckt wurde, war ein vielseitiger, behutsam interpretierender Darsteller, der auch seinen Schurken häufig einen Hauch von Melancholie beimischt. Immerhin spielte er für Fritz Lang (1960) und Claude Chabrol (1990) den genialen Superverbrecher Dr. Mabuse, dem er auch in einer reichlich spekulativen Kino-Serie in den 60-ern dämonische Gestalt verlieh."

Wolfgang Preiss starb am 27. November 2002 in der Klinik auf der Bühlerhöhe bei Baden-Baden. (aus "menschen in baden-baden")
