He was Director, Author, Actor, known for Non ou a va gloria de mandar (1990), Douro, faina fluvial (1931), Lisbon Story (1994), Manoel de Oliveira's first movie on record is from 1927. Manoel de Oliveira died on April 2, 2015 in Oporto. His last motion picture on file dates from 2010.
Biographical Notes
Der Jesuitenschüler löste 1931 mit seinem Erstling, einem kritischen Dokumentarfilm, einen politischen Skandal aus. Elf Jahre später drehte er seinen ersten Spielfilm, erst 1963 folgte mit "Der Leidensweg Jesu in Curalha" sein zweiter. Sein vergleichsweise schmales, eigenwilliges Werk - es folgten u.a. "Das Verhägnis der Liebe", "Die Kannibalen" oder "Die göttliche Komödie" - macht ihn zu einer der wichtigsten Persönlichkeiten der europäischen Kinoszene. (BR3)
