Synopsis in German
Der gescheiterte und desillusionierte Schriftsteller Alan Squier (Leslie Howard) hat seine reiche Frau in Frankreich verlassen und trampt ziellos durch die Wüste von Arizona. In der abgelegenen Raststätte von Jason Maple verliebt er sich in dessen hübsche Tochter Gabby (Bette Davis), die seine Kunstbegeisterung teilt und aus ihrem Milieu ausbrechen möchte. Alan ist sich bewusst, dass er Gabby nichts bieten kann, und verlässt sie.
Der reiche Bankier Chisholm nimmt Alan mit, doch schon nach einigen Meilen nimmt ihnen der flüchtige Bankräuber Duke Mantee (Humphrey Bogart) den Wagen ab, um zur Raststätte zurückzufahren, wo er sich mit seiner ebenfalls von der Polizei gesuchten Geliebten verabredet hat. Um Gabby besorgt, kehrt auch Alan zu der Raststätte zurück, die Duke mit seinen drei schiesswütigen Kumpanen in seine Gewalt gebracht hat. Während des zermürbenden Wartens auf Dukes Geliebte schlägt Alan dem Gangster ein skurriles Geschäft vor, um Gabby seine Liebe zu beweisen und ihr die Chance zu geben, ihre Träume zu verwirklichen.
