Synopsis in German
Wien, 1938: Rechtsanwalt Werner von Basil hat für Bischof Ambrosse wertvolles Kirchengut vor dem Zugriff der Nazis gerettet. Er wird verhaftet und in Isolation gehalten, als er sich weigert, den Verbleib der Schätze zu verraten. Als Überlebenstraining erlernt er das Schachspiel aus einem Buch, das er auf dem Weg zum Verhör gestohlen hat. Bald kann er 150 Partien von Schachmeisterschaften auswendig spielen. Nach seiner Haftentlassung trifft er auf dem Weg in die USA an Bord eines Schiffes den Schachweltmeister Mirko Centowic. Wie unter Zwang greift er in dessen laufendes Spiel ein und erzwingt gegen diesen sogar ein Remis. Die Partie wird zum verbissenen Kampf der beiden Kontrahenten. (3Sat Presse)

Schon der Anfang ist auf einen Durchschnittskriminalfilm ausgerichtet: verheissungsvolle Blicke der Schauspieler, Türgeknalle und dunkle Andeutungen wechseln miteinander ab. (...) Zudem sind Felmys Anstrengungen, einen Gestapofunktionär zu spielen, hilflos - eine typische Fehlbesetzung. Auch Curd Jürgens spielt die Hauptrolle mit wechselndem Glück.
