Synopsis in German
2000 britische Soldaten harren 1943 auf der griechischen Insel Cheros aus. Um diese Truppen auszuschalten, planen die Deutschen einen Angriff auf das Eiland. Die Zahl der Angreifer wird jene der britischen Verteidiger weit übersteigen, und so ist die Niederlage absehbar. Es bleibt nur der Rückzug. Doch zwei mächtige deutsche Kanonen auf einer felsigen Anhöhe der gegenüberliegenden Insel Navarone beherrschen die Meerenge und verunmöglichen es der Royal Navy, nach Cheros durchzubrechen, um die bedrohten Soldaten von dort zu evakuieren.
Die Kanonen müssen also weg, weshalb Captain Keith Mallory (Gregory Peck) damit beauftragt wird, mit einem Spezialtrupp verdeckt nach Navarone zu fahren und dort die gefürchteten Geschütze zu sprengen. Dafür hat er allerdings nur noch sechs Tage Zeit. Ihm zur Seite stehen Corporal Miller (David Niven), die beiden Griechen Andreas Stavros (Anthony Quinn) und Spyros Pappadimos (James Darren), ein eiskalter Killer. C.P.O. Brown (Stanley Baker) und Major Franklin (Anthony Quayle), der das Unternehmen leitet, vervollständigen den tollkühnen Haufen. Franklin wird bereits früh verletzt, sodass Mallory das Kommando übernehmen muss. Und als das Team auf Navarone landet, stehen die offensichtlich bereits bestens informierten deutschen Truppen bereit. (Presse SF DRS)
