Synopsis in German
Penny Baxter und seine Frau Orry leben mit ihrem Sohn Jody von den bescheidenen Erträgen ihrer kleinen Farm in der Wildnis Floridas. Der beste Freund des elfjährigen Jody ist sein Vater. Gemeinsam bestehen die beiden manches Abenteuer. Als Penny ein Reh erschießen muss, erlaubt er seinem Sohn, das zurückgebliebene Rehkitz aufzuziehen. Der Junge ist sehr glücklich mit seinem neuen Freund und nennt das Kiz "Flag". Doch das junge Reh richtet immer wieder Schäden auf der Farm an. Als Flag erneut Maispflanzen abfrisst, besteht Penny darauf, dass Jody sich von seinem vierbeinigen Freund trennt.

Weinend lässt Jody Flag im Wald frei. Als das Reh zurückkehrt, greift Orry zum Gewehr und verletzt das Tier schwer. Jody muss Flag töten. Daraufhin läuft er von zu Hause fort. (ARD Presse)
