István Szabó belässt den Stoff in seiner Zeit, die Kulisse bleibt. Sein Film ist vor allem andern eine Liebeserklärung ans Theater und dessen Figuranten. Obwohl Annette Benings Julia als allmählich alternder gefeierter Londoner Bühnenstar im Mittelpunkt des Geschehens steht, ist Jeremy Irons als ihr geschäftssinniger Impresario und desinteressierter Gatte das Ereignis des Films.
