Synopsis in German
«Mare Nostrum ist zugleich eine Spionagegeschichte um deutsche Unterseeboote, wie eine Liebesgeschichte zwischen einem jungen spanischen Kapitän und einer deutschen Spionin. Zeitlicher Hintergrund ist der Erste Weltkrieg: In den Ruinen von Pompeji lernen sich Ulysses Ferragut und Freya Talberg kennen. Der verheiratete Ulysses, der das Mittelmeer wie seine Westentasche kennt, erliegt der Schönheit Freyas, die ihn überredet, als Lotse bei einer U-Boot-Operation zu fungieren. Als er erkennen muss, dass er indirekt am Tod seines geliebten Sohnes Esteban schuld ist, der durch deutsche Torpedos starb, stellt er sein Schiff Mare Nostrum in den Dienst der Franzosen, um als Kommandant gegen die deutsche Marine zu kämpfen. Seine Liebe zu Freya schlägt in Hass um, und er sorgt dafür, dass sie als Spionin hingerichtet wird. Beeindruckend ist die vom Top-Kameramann John F. Seitz gedrehte Sequenz des Exekutionskommandos, die aus der Sicht der Delinquentin gedreht wurde.
Mare Nostrum galt lange Zeit als verschollen. Erst in den späten siebziger Jahren wurde der Film wiederentdeckt und von Photoplay Productions London in gewohnt sorgfältiger Weise restauriert. Die Viragen kommen dem Original sehr nahe.» (www.dmh.de / 2006)
