Synopsis in German

- Gesamtqualifikation: Guter Mittelfilm.» (Paimann's Filmlisten Nr. 721 vom 31. Jänner 1930)

«Rex Ingram's british film
"Three Passions" is Well Directed and Well Acted"

Love, Ambition and Religion are mutually hostile, each working for different ends, in "The Three Passions", a new product of Rex Ingram's, which somehow fails in that elusive quality of greatness which characterises most of his former films.

The theme of the picture, which cannot be taken too serioulsly, is the conflicting influences of money and ambition, religion and love. Each and all of this "passions" vitally affect the family of a great shipbuilder, aself.made man, powerfully played by Shayle Gardner, whose heartfelt deire is that his only son should carry on this business. But the son feels a spiritual calling and decides to join an Anglican Brotherhood, which he duly leaves for Love, as personified, very alluringly, by Alice Terry.

Alice Terry Back Again

The film is remarkable for its characterisation abd the skill which minor parts have been played. Claire Eames' portrayal of the shipping magnate's lascivious wife is a powerful character study... Andrew Engleman's "Hairless Man" is a fine presentation of a human brute and a delicious piece of low comedy is purveyed by M. Mariotti.

It is a pity Ingram's genius as a director had no better material than this story by Cosmo Hamilton. There are plenty of effective incidents, but the concluding strike scene is strictly according to American screen convention. Surely it is time even screen authors had grown out of the belief that all trade union leaders are "Bolshie" agents and all workmen sheep.» (The Film weekly, October 7, 1929)
