Synopsis in German
Ein alter Farmer wird von Viehdieben erschossen. Nach den Umständen muß Sheriff John Higgins annehmen, daß er der Täter ist. Er legt den Stern ab, läßt sich vor lauter Kummer einen Bart stehen und verwildert bis zur Unkenntlichkeit. Beth Matthews, die Tochter des Ermordeten, trifft ein (in einem Auto, auf dem «Stage» steht). Sie wird überfallen und von John, von dessen vermeintlicher Schuld sie nichts weiß, gerettet. Später erzählt sie, er sei «the most horrible creature I've ever seen». Der neue Sheriff Williams bittet John, sich um das Mädchen zu kümmern. Er wäscht und rasiert sich und ist nicht wiederzuerkennen; Beth merkt tatsächlich nicht, daß er identisch mit der «horrible creature» ist. John wird ihr Vormann. Joe Dickson, der wahre Mörder ihres Vaters, versucht John bei Beth anzu-schwärzen. Beim großen Dorffest mit Musik, Tanz und Wettmelken kommt es zum Showdown, bei dem John auch noch die Indianer gegen die Bösewichte mobilisiert. (Goldman - John Wayne und seine Filme)
