Synopsis in German
In der Schwabinger Boheme lebt der junge russische Schriftsteller Andrej Starcov in guter Freundschaft mit dem futuristischen Maler Kurt Wahn. Bei Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs gerät er in eine gefährliche Situation, als ihn patriotische Fanatiker lynchen wollen. In letzter Minute rettet ihn Leutnant von Schönau, ein kunstliebender Mäzen Kurt Wahns. Während seiner Internierung verliebt sich Andrej Starcov in Marie Urbach, ohne auch nur zu ahnen, dass sie die Braut seines Retters ist. Mit dem Versprechen, sie bald nachkommen zu lassen, kehrt Andrej nach dem Friedensschluss von Brest-Litowsk nach Russland zurück. In einem Kriegsgefangenenlager begegnet er dort Kurt Wahn wieder. Der hat sich inzwischen den Bolschewiki angeschlossen. Bei einem Gefecht nimmt er von Schönau gefangen, der auf Seiten der Konterrevolution kämpft. Andrej verhilft dem Leutnant zur Flucht, um Marie einen Brief zukommen zu lassen. Kurt erfährt davon und erschiesst seinen alten Freund Andrej als "Verräter der Revolution".
