Synopsis in German
Bezirksstaatsanwalt Jesse Hanley (Thurston Hall) kandidiert in Banton für den Gouverneursposten und hat gute Aussichten, gewählt zu werden. In dieser Situation kommt der junge Reporter Frank Ross (James Cagney) einem Bauskandal auf die Spur, in den Hanley verwickelt ist. Um ihn auszumanövrieren, täuscht der korrupte Politiker mit Hilfe einiger Gangster vor, Ross habe betrunken einen schweren Autounfall verursacht, der drei jungen Leuten das Leben kostete. Ross wird daraufhin zu einer langjährigen Haftstrafe verurteilt und wandert unschuldig ins Gefängnis. In der Strafanstalt freundet sich Ross mit dem Gangsterboss Stacey (George Raft) an und hilft ihm, während einer Gerichtsverhandlung zu entkommen. Stacey hat versprochen, Ross Beweise dafür zu liefern, dass er unschuldig verurteilt wurde. Um sein Versprechen einzulösen, muss er jedoch zurück in die Haftanstalt, wo die Dinge bald eskalieren...... (ARD Presse)
