Reviews in German: "Das antike Luxusweib, von dessen Schönheitsbad in Eselsmilch unsere Schulbücher berichteten, hatte seinerzeit nicht nur älteren Herren wie Julius Caesar und dann auch noch seinem Nachfolger Mark Anton den Kopf verdreht - die neuzeitlichere Version in Form von Frl. Liz Taylor machte es mit einem gewissen Richard Burton. Beide Damen markierten auch das Ende eines Imperiums: Ägypten wurde unter Cleopatra zu einer römischen Provinz und Filmcleopatra Liz (- nicht nur sie allein) trieb die Hollywood-Produktion 20th Century Fox in den Ruin.
Der Film sollte Hollywoods Angriffspitze gegen die drohende Übermacht Fernsehen werden, noch grösser, noch breiter, noch teurer, noch aufwendiger, noch länger - der spektakulärste Film mit der ersten Liga der damaligen Weltstars, angeführt vom Filmpaar des Jahrzentes Liz Taylor und Richard Burton. Und er ist es - vom Aufwand gesehen - auch heute noch, perfekt inszeniert von (neben manchen anderen) Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Kein tiefgreifender Film, aber gut gemachte Show, die Leinwand als Marktplatz der Eitelkeiten. Eben: grösser, breiter, teurer, aufwendiger, länger..."(lhg)
