Als die Gestapo die Jüdin Henriette, Ehefrau des Klavierproduzenten Hans Alt, verhaften will, stürzt sie sich aus dem Fenster, ehe ihr Sohn Hermann, ein fanatischer Nazi, eingreifen kann.
"Der Engel mit der Posaune" ist der Glücksbringer der österreichischen Klavierbauer-Familie Alt, deren wechselhafte Geschichte der Film vom Niedergang der österreichisch-ungarischen Monarchie bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges erzählt.
