Das Theater als Schlachtfeld zwischen Schauspielerin und Regisseur, einem tyrannischen Feudalherrn, versessen darauf, als Pygmalion Carole Lombard in Galatea zu verwandeln. Hawks fordert seinen weiblichen Star in einer Drehpause auf, die verdammte Schauspielerei sein zu lassen und vor der Kamera das zu tun, was sie im wirklichen Leben getan hätte: John Barrymore in den Bauch zu treten. Und er hält alle Akteure an, schneller und einander ins Wort fallend zu sprechen. Was daraus resultiert, ist Hawks at his best und ein Tempo, das dem Hauptschauplatz des Films, dem rasenden Zug mit Namen „Twentieth Century“ angemessen ist: Frenesie einander überlappender, unterbrechender, niederhagelnder Dialoge, Redeschwall als Kampfmittel, Erotik als Waffe, tragische Lustigkeit, zum Brüllen reizende Tragik.
