Der erfolgreiche Businessman Clemson Reade will die umtriebige, emanzipierte Geschäftsfrau Priscilla "Effie" Effington ehelichen, muss aber bereits während der Verlobung betrübt zur Kenntnis nehmen, dass sie bereits verheiratet ist - mit ihrer Arbeit. Clem löst verärgert die Bindung, um sich mit Prinzessin Tarji zu verloben, eine willfährige Orientalin, in der er nun endlich seine Traumfrau gefunden zu haben glaubt. Doch als Effie sich mit Tarji anfreundet und ihr von der Emanzipation der amerikanischen Frau berichtet, ist Clems Traum von der grenzenlosen Hingabe der Orientalin endgültig gestorben...
