Bat Masterson, Spieler mit dunkler Vergangenheit, kommt nach Dodge City, wo unter einem korrupten Sheriff schlimme Zustände herrschen. Bats Bruder Ed kandidiert für den Posten des Sheriffs und wird prompt umgebracht.
Bat lässt sich zum Sheriff machen, bekommt es mit korrupten Politkern und mit der Gang zu tun, zu der er selbst einmal gehört hat. Dennoch kann er dem Gesetz wieder Geltung verschaffen.... (wdr Presse)
Remarks and general Information in German: "Drauf und dran" gilt als der beste Film über den Sheriff von Dodge City. Wieder ist McCrea der sympathisch-nüchterne Held, der mit gesundem Menschenverstand und ohne jede Hysterie einer gefährlichen Arbeit nachgeht.
Es sollte Joel McCreas letzter Film werden. Doch es kam anders: 1961 holte ihn Sam Peckinpah aus dem Ruhestand zurück. Es wurde eine triumphale Rückkehr auf die Leinwand: "Sacramento" ("Ride the High Country"). (wdr Presse)
