Wien zur Zeit des Wiener Kongresses: Der norddeutsche Graf Wolkersheim nimmt als Diplomat am Kongress teil, lehnt jedoch den beliebten Walzer als "sinnloses Gehopse" ab. Darüber gerät er mit seiner Frau Melanie in Streit. Sie wirft ihm vor, spießig zu sein, da ihm das "Wiener Blut" fehle, und verlässt ihn Hals über Kopf. Der einsame Wolkersheim nimmt daraufhin Tanzstunde bei der charmanten Tänzerin Liesl. Melanie erfährt vom Treiben ihres Gemahls, kehrt unerwartet zurück und trifft auf dem Hofball ihren Mann mit Liesl.
Die amourösen Verwicklungen werden durch zwei Lakaien der Herrschaften, Knöpfel und Jean, zunächst noch verschlimmert. Doch es kommt zur Versöhnung, und das Paar beschließt, für immer in Wien zu bleiben. (3Sat Presse)
