Der Film, von Bert Brechts Drama Furcht und Elend des Dritten Reiches inspiriert, wurde von Pudovkin in Alma Ata realisiert. In die kasachische Hauptstadt waren im Herbst 1941 die Moskauer Studios vor den herannahenden deutschen Truppen evakuiert worden. Nach seiner Fertigstellung wurde DIE MÖRDER MACHEN SICH AUF DEN WEG allerdings verboten. Offiziell, weil er zu sehr Mitgefühl für die Opfer und zu wenig Hass auf die Täter erzeugen würde. Ohne Schwierigkeiten konnte der Terror aber auch als Entlarvung der eigenen Verhältnisse gelesen werden.

VSEVOLOD PUDOVKIN
1893 in Pensa, Russland. Ab 1920 Studium an der Moskauer Filmhochschule. 1922 wird Lew Kulešov sein Lehrer. Seit 1925 Regisseur. Einer der wichtigsten russischen Filmtheoretiker. Stirbt 1953 in Riga. Filme (Auswahl): DIE MUTTER (1926), STURM ÜBER ASIEN (1928)
