Sweden 14th century: A knight returns from crusade to find black plague spreading death across his land. One of the greatest films of the era (****)

Reviews in German: "Der Ritter Block kehrt von einem Kreuzzug in seine schwedische Heimat zurück. Hier wütet die Pest. Er begegnet dem Tod, dem er aber noch eine letzte Gnadenfrist abtrotzen kann. In seiner verbleibenden Zeit zieht er mit seinem Knappen durch eine Landschaft, die von der Angst vor dem Sterben gezeichnet ist. Man begegnet verzweifelten Menschen, Leichenfledderern, Wanderkomödianten und Menschen voller Hass und religiösem Wahn. Bergman beschwört die mittelalterliche Vergangenheit in apokalyptischen Visionen herauf, die aber immer auch das Düstere mit dem Komödiantischen und das Mystische mit dem Realistischen verbinden.
