Europa im Ersten Weltkrieg: In Paris interessiert sich die High Society weniger für das aufgeheizte politische Klima und die Schlachtfelder als für die faszinierende Tänzerin Mata Hari. Ihr mondänes Auftreten und ihre eigenwilligen orientalischen Tänze machen die angeblich aus Java stammende Schönheit zu einer angesagten Attraktion. Salons und Musikhallen reißen sich ebenso wie Dutzende von Verehrern um die faszinierende Frau. Was zunächst verborgen bleibt: Die betörende Tänzerin arbeitet als Spionin. Unter Einsatz ihrer körperlichen Reize kundschaftet sie geheime Informationen aus und gibt sie über ihr Bühnenspiel an Eingeweihte im Publikum weiter. Ihr Leben ändert sich entscheidend, als Mata Hari eines Tages einen Hauptmann bespitzeln soll und sich dabei in ihn verliebt.
