Prinz Ludwig von Saxe-Tholburg reist inkognito durch sein Reich und verliebt sich dabei in Katrina Ardelheim, die Tochter eines Gastwirts. Ihr Idyll wird durch die Ankunft eines Boten gestört, der die Nachricht überbringt, dass Austrania damit droht einen Krieg anzufangen. Katrina weiss nun um die wahre Identität ihres Geliebten und ist untröstlich, dass sie ihn nie heiraten können wird. Nach der Abreise Ludwigs kann Katrina mit Hilfe ihres Bruder Roalf zwei Spione stellen. Katrina tötet in Notwehr einen der beiden Spione, der als austranischer Botschafter identifiziert wird. Obwohl Katrina sich schuldig bekennt, soll ihr Bruder hingerichtet werden, um die Austranier zu beruhigen. Katrina appelliert an Prinz Ludwig, der sich gegen seine Berater dafür entscheidet, ihren Bruder zu begnadigen, woraufhin Austrania den Krieg erklärt. Die entscheidende Schlacht wird in der Nähe des Ardelheim Gasthofes gefochten. Katrina wird zur Heldin, indem sie unter Einsatz ihres Lebens Ludwigs Truppen das Signal zum Angriff gibt. Sie wird von den Austraniern tödlich verwundet und stirbt mit Ludwig an ihrer Seite. Ludwig trauert um Katrina und ihren Bruder, der im Kampf gestorben ist. (Deutsche Kinemathek)
