Das Gold in der Kriegskasse eines amerikanischen Forts verschwindet während eines Indianerüberfalls spurlos - und mit ihm Kommandant Major Kingsley. Es entsteht der Verdacht, der Offizier habe sich mit dem Gold nach Mexiko abgesetzt. Winnetou und sein weißer Blutsbruder Old Shatterhand wollen Kingsleys schöner Tochter Mabel helfen, die verletzte Ehre ihres Vaters wieder herzustellen. Aber auch der hinterhältige Murdock ist mit seiner Bande auf der Suche nach dem Versteck des Schatzes. (3Sat Presse)
Remarks and general Information in German: «In "Winnetou und Shatterhand im Tal der Toten" spielte Pierre Brice zum elften und letzten Mal die Rolle, mit der er seit "Der Schatz im Silbersee" 1962 eins geworden war. Auch Lex Barker als Old Shatterhand und Regisseur Harald Reinl kehrten noch einmal zurück. Gedreht wurde im damaligen Jugoslawien - als besonderes Schmankerl wurden aber auch einige Reitszenen mit Doubles im echten Monument Valley gedreht.» (3Sat Presse)
