In Afrika erzählt der französische Kolonialoffizier Saint-Avit einem jungen Leutnant von seinem zurückliegenden Abenteuer in der sagenhaften Stadt Atlantis, die unter dem Wüstensand begraben liegen soll: Vor zwei Jahren sind er und sein Freund Morhange dorthin verschleppt worden.
In Atlantis regiert die unnahbare Antinea, der jeder Mann hoffnungslos verfällt. Allein Morhange lässt sich nicht in ihren Bann schlagen, weshalb die Herrscherin erstmals Zuneigung für einen ihrer männlichen Gefangenen empfindet. Da sie Morhange nicht für sich gewinnen kann, befiehlt sie aus Eifersucht dem völlig hörigen Sain-Avit, seinen eigenen Freund zu töten. Nach dem Mord an Morhange kommt Saint-Avit wieder zur Besinnung, und nachdem er vergeblich versucht, Antinea zu töten, gelingt ihm mit Hilfe einer Sklavin die Flucht aus Atlantis. Als er seine Erzählung beendet hat, wird Saint-Avit wieder von der Erinnerung an Antinea heimgesucht. Allein bricht er in die Wüste auf, und nach einem Sandsturm bleibt er spurlos verschwunden.
